跌落式避雷器作用在于雷電擊中架空線路時通過避雷器與導線之間形成的串聯，能在瞬間有效地截斷工頻續流，避免發生雷擊斷線事故可有效減少因雷擊造成的線路開關跳閘。跌落式避雷器在后端安裝有脫離器,利用工頻短路電流讓出現異常的避雷器自動翻落,退出運行防止事故擴大,并易于維護人員及時發現進行維護和更換。
